Since leaving school over two years ago, Trevor found it difficult to secure sustainable employment. He started volunteering for Centra Care & Support and is now a full time Circle Housing employee.
“I was browsing online when I stumbled across Centra Care & Support’s volunteering scheme. I didn’t have much going on workwise, so I thought I’d go for it. I searched the volunteer manager’s name online, found his email address and touched base with him. We met up and I told him the things I wanted to achieve. He obviously saw my enthusiasm and passion and gave me a chance.
I think people my age are often put off by the idea of working for free, but in my opinion you’re getting so much more back in return. You’re getting experience and that’s something invaluable. So when my friends ask about volunteering, I really do encourage them to consider it.
Also, anyone looking at your CV is going to be impressed that you were prepared to give up some of your free time in order to further your career.
Today my future’s bright and I believe that’s all down to volunteering. What volunteering has taught me is that if you make sacrifices and work hard, you can achieve the things that you really want out of life.”
